FAQs
For some participants, especially those working on physical confidence, coordination, or sensory integration, supported pony rides through a simple obstacle course can be offered. This is not a riding lesson; it’s a mindful activity that helps build core strength, balance, body awareness, and trust. The pace is slow and secure, always guided, and only ever offered when a participant is ready.
No. Two Seasons Equine Assisted Learning does not provide therapy, counselling, psychology, or clinical treatment.
Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an educational and experiential approach, not a therapeutic one. This means sessions are designed to support learning, reflection, and personal insight through guided interaction with horses, rather than diagnosis, treatment, or clinical intervention.
While many people find sessions calming or emotionally meaningful, they are not intended to treat mental health conditions, and they do not replace professional therapy or medical care. There is no assessment, analysis, or treatment plan involved.
If you or your child are currently working with a therapist, Equine Assisted Learning can sit alongside other supports, but it is not a substitute for them.
Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is a structured, experiential learning approach that uses guided interaction with horses to support self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication, and confidence.
Horses play a central role because of how they naturally interact with their environment. As prey animals, horses are highly sensitive to changes in body language, movement, breathing, and emotional state. They respond to what is happening in the moment, not to what someone says they are feeling.
Research in equine-assisted interventions and human–animal interaction shows that horses can respond to physiological and behavioural cues such as muscle tension, posture, heart rate patterns, and nervous system arousal. This means that when a person is anxious, disconnected, or unsettled, a horse may move away, become alert, or disengage. When a person becomes calmer, more present, or regulated, the horse often responds by softening, approaching, or remaining nearby.
These responses are not taught or trained behaviours. They are natural reactions, which makes them honest and immediate. For participants, this creates clear feedback without judgement or criticism.
In Equine Assisted Learning, the facilitator helps the participant notice what is happening in these moments. For example, how a shift in breathing changes the horse’s response, or how slowing down affects connection. Over time, participants begin to recognise patterns that often mirror everyday life, such as boundaries, communication, trust, or self-regulation.
No. A diagnosis or referral is not required.
Many participants attend without any formal diagnosis. People come for a wide range of reasons, including:
- Wanting a calm, outdoor experience
- Supporting emotional regulation or confidence
- Seeking connection without pressure or judgement
- Wanting something different from talk-based approaches
For safety reasons, Equine Assisted Learning sessions at Two Seasons are suitable for ages 5 and up.
Working with horses requires a basic level of physical awareness, impulse control, and the ability to follow simple safety instructions. Setting a minimum age helps ensure the safety of both participants and horses, and allows sessions to run calmly and predictably.
We warmly welcome:
- Children
- Teenagers
- Adults
- Elders
- Children may build confidence, body awareness, and emotional regulation
- Teenagers often benefit from the non-verbal, non-judgemental nature of horse interaction
- Adults may find space to slow down, reconnect, and reflect
- Older adults and elders often enjoy the calm, relational aspects and gentle engagement
Each session begins with a calm welcome and an introduction to the horses and the environment. Safety guidelines are explained clearly and at an appropriate level for the participant.
The session then unfolds at a pace that suits the individual or group. Activities may include grooming, observing horse behaviour, simple guided tasks, creative or sensory activities, or quiet time sitting with or near the horses.
There is no pressure to perform or achieve anything. Participants are supported to engage in a way that feels safe and comfortable. Some people are active; others prefer stillness. Both are valid.
Sessions end with time to slow down, reflect, and gently transition out of the experience.
No. Only children who are booked, paid, and registered participants may attend sessions or events.
This applies to:
- Individual sessions
- Group sessions
- Events such as Pony Pamper Day and Stablehand Day
- Birthday parties and private bookings
- Safety: Horses are highly sensitive to movement, noise, and numbers. Extra children increase unpredictability and risk.
- Supervision: Staff ratios are planned based on the number of booked participants. Unregistered children cannot be safely supervised.
- Fairness: Sessions are priced per participant. Allowing unpaid children to observe or join activities is unfair to families who have booked correctly.
- Experience quality: Extra people can be distracting for both the horses and the children who are participating, reducing the calm, focused environment we work hard to maintain.
Because sessions take place outdoors, it’s important to dress appropriately.
You must wear:
- Closed-toe shoes (required for safety)
- Comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor conditions
- Long sleeves for groundwork activities
- A hat and sunscreen in warmer weather
- Water, especially on warm days</li.
Equine Assisted Learning sessions will go ahead in most weather conditions, including light rain.
However, we reserve the right to cancel or reschedule sessions if weather conditions pose a risk to participants or horses.
This includes:
- Extreme heat
- Storms or heavy rain
- Unsafe ground or environmental conditions
All sessions:
- Must be booked in advance
- Require full payment upfront
